Materials Needed:

  • Colorful yarn for the pot, leaves, and dirt (Size: Medium, Brand example: Hobby Lobby)
  • Polyfill for stuffing
  • Size H crochet hook (5 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needle

Making the Leaves:

1 Save

Create a slip knot.

  • Chain 35 stitches to start (adjust the number for desired leaf length).
  • Skip the first chain from the hook. In the back loop only, make 3 single crochets in the second chain.
  • Repeat 3 single crochets in the back loops only for each chain along the length of your starting chain.
  • The leaf will start to curl naturally as you go.
  • Finish by cutting the yarn, leaving at least 2 inches to tie off.

After Making the Pot:

  • Start with a magic ring.
  • Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
  • Make 13 double crochets into the ring (14 stitches total including chain 3).
  • Pull the tail to tighten the magic ring.
  • Slip stitch to the first double crochet (not the chain 3) to close the round.

2 Save

  • Chain 3, then make an increase (2 double crochets) in each space all around (28 double crochets for the round).
  • Flip the work on its side and chain 1.
  • Make half double crochets in the back loops only for 28 stitches.
  • Repeat for a total of 6 rows.
  • Do a slip stitch border around the top of the last row.

3 Save

  • Chain 40 for the strap, then cut and tie off.
  • Add as many straps as desired (the example uses three straps).

Making the Soil (Dirt):

  • Make a magic ring and add 14 double crochets with the chain 3 counting as a stitch.
  • Pull the tail but not too tightly, as you will need to insert the leaves into this hole.
  • Make a second round with 28 double crochets to increase, and then slip stitch to the first double crochet of the round.

4 Save

Assembly:

  • Attach the soil to the pot with the long yarn tail using a sewing needle, sewing around the top loops of the half double crochets of the basket.
  • Sew the leaves to the soil, starting by inserting the tails through the center hole and securing from the back.
  • Tie the straps together at the desired hanging length.
  • Add a small amount of polyfill to the pot, making sure not to overstuff.
  • Lastly, tuck in any loose ends with the sewing needle for a neat finish.

Additional Notes:

  • The creator also provides alternate chain lengths for a variety of leaf lengths (35, 37, 42, 48, 52, or any custom size).
  • You can customize the number of leaves and their lengths according to the look you want.
