Making the Second Round:

  • Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
  • Make an increase in each of the previous round's stitches by working 2 double crochets into each stitch around.
  • You should have a total of 24 double crochets.
  • Join with a slip stitch and cut off the yarn.

Creating the Petals:

  • Attach darker shade of yellow yarn with a slip stitch.
  • For each petal: Chain 2, work 1 double crochet, 1 treble crochet, a picot (chain 3 and slip stitch in the top of the treble crochet), another treble crochet, and a double crochet into the same space. Finish the petal with chain 2 and a slip stitch.
  • Repeat this process, working front loop only, around the circle for the first layer of petals.

Second Layer of Petals:

  • Use a lighter shade of yellow.
  • Create a slip knot and start working behind the first layer of petals, targeting the back loops left from the first layer.
  • Chain 4 spaces between the back loops of the first layer's petals, joining them with slip stitches.
  • For each petal of the second layer, follow the same process as the first layer, positioning the petals between those of the first layer.

Save

Transforming into a Granny Square:

  • Work a single crochet base around by chaining 5, then single crocheting between the spaces of the petals, and repeating around to create 12 chain-5 spaces.
  • Attach green yarn, and in any chain-5 space, work three double crochets, chain 2, three more double crochets (first corner made).
  • Chain 1, then work three double crochets in the next chain-5 space, chain 1. Repeat from to till you reach the next corner space, where you'll make another corner by working 3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc.
  • Continue with this pattern, creating a square.

Save

Final Round and Finishing Touches:

  • Change to white yarn (if desired) to work the final round in the pattern established.
  • Finish off and cut the yarn.
  • Block the project by pinning it to a board, spraying it lightly with water, and letting it dry to achieve a neat finish.
