Materials Needed:

  • Two colors of yarn (referred to as the first color and the second color for clarity)
  • A crochet hook suitable for the yarn
  • Scissors

Creating the Swirls:

Start the Center Loop:

  • Make a loop with your yarn and insert your crochet hook.
  • Chain 4 stitches (to form a small circle).
  • Perform a slip stitch into the first chain to close the circle.

First Round of Double Crochets:

  • Into the circle you created, do 6 double crochets. To perform a double crochet: yarn over (wrap the yarn around the hook), insert the hook into the circle, yarn over again and pull the yarn through the circle, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook, then yarn over again and pull through the remaining 2 loops.

Switch to Second Color:

  • Cut the yarn, leaving a tail to work in later. Attach the second color yarn by making a loop and continuing with 6 double crochets into the same circle as before.

Increasing the Swirl:

  • Start increasing by doing double crochet stitches into the tops of the previous round's stitches. To create the swirl, you'll need to add more stitches in each round. This means you'll do at least 2 double crochets into each top chain of the previous stitches as you go along.

Alternating Colors:

  • Continue with the pattern, alternating colors every few rounds to create the swirl effect. Ensure to increase the number of stitches in each round to keep the piece flat and maintain the swirl.

Finishing Each Swirl:

  • Once your swirl is big enough for one earmuff side, tie off the yarn. You will need to make two of these swirls following the same steps.

Joining the Swirls:

  • Place the swirls on either side of the earmuff padding or material you choose to use for insulation. Secure them together through the outer edges to keep the padding in place.

Creating the Band:

  • Measure the distance around your head where the earmuffs will sit.
  • Crochet a band starting with a chain that matches this length, then follow with rows of double crochet (or triple crochet for faster completion) until it reaches the desired width.
  • Sew or crochet the ends of the bands to the outer edges of each swirl to complete the earmuff.

Finishing Touches:

  • Make any adjustments to ensure the earmuffs fit comfortably. You can also add more rows to the band if needed for a better fit.
  • Weave in all loose ends for a neat finish.
