How To Crochet Stunning Cover Up Skirt

Materials Needed:

  • Medium weight yarn (The example uses Winter King brand, which is 100% acrylic and 4-ply)
  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Measuring tape
  • Darning needle
  • Stitch markers (optional)
  • Scissors

Foundation and Row 1:

Start with a slip knot and chain (ch) 5.

  • After the 5th ch, pull out your hook, insert it into the first ch, then back into the 5th ch to avoid twisting.
  • Continue chaining until the chain (when slightly stretched) matches your hip measurement. For a 38-inch hip, chain 112 (ensure the total number of chains is a multiple of 4).

  • Close the chain into a round by pulling the second loop through the first to complete the foundation chain.
  • Chain 1 (counts as the first stitch), then perform a half-double crochet (hdc) in each chain around.
  • End the row by slip stitching into the top of the initial ch 1. You should have the same number of hdc as the initial chains.

Main Pattern:

Row 2:

  • Creating the V-Stitch Pattern
  • Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), then turn your work.
  • In the same stitch (st), perform a double crochet (dc), chain (ch) 2, and in the 4th st from the hook, make another dc (forming the first V-stitch).
  • Chain 1, make a second V-stitch in the same space by performing another dc, ch 2, and dc.
  • Skip 3 stitches, and in the 4th, repeat the V-stitch pattern. Continue to the end of the row.

Subsequent Rounds:

  • For each new round, chain 3 and repeat the V-stitch in each V-stitch gap from the previous row until you reach the desired length before starting the slit (for example, after 14 rounds).

Creating the Slit:

  • Determine the length from your waist to where you want the slit to begin (example used is 7 inches).
  • Starting from the end of the last round, chain 3, double crochet back into that gap, chain 1, then another double crochet in the same gap to start forming the slit.
  • Continue the V-stitch pattern around the skirt without joining rounds to create an opening.

Finishing:

  • After reaching the full length of the skirt (55 additional rows in the provided example), chain 1 and cut off the yarn, leaving a tail to weave in.
  • Measure to confirm the length. The example aims for a 40-inch length but achieves 41 inches, which is acceptable.

Waistband and Drawstring:

  • Create a drawstring by chaining between 200 and 250 chains with two strands of yarn.
  • Attach the drawstring to the waist of the skirt, weaving it in and out of the V stitches around the waist. Adjust to fit.

Final Touches:

  • Weave in any remaining ends.
  • Secure the drawstring with a knot and make a bow.
