Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (Lion Brand Basic Stitch suggested)
  • G crochet hook (or the size needed to obtain gauge)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Gauge:

The first four rounds of the pattern should measure about 1.5 inches. Adjust hook size as needed to achieve this gauge if exact size is important.

Pattern Notes:

  • Pattern includes instructions for mini and larger baskets; mini basket creation demonstrated here.
  • Pattern is worked in continuous rounds.
  • Chain 1 at the beginning of rounds does not count as a stitch.
  • Join rounds with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round unless otherwise indicated.

Base:

Round 1:

1 Save

Create a slip knot, chain 3.

  • Work 8 half double crochets (hdc) into the first chain from the hook (work over tail).
  • Join with a slip stitch to the first hdc, making sure to pull the slip stitch tight.

Round 2:

  • Chain 1, work 2 hdc into the same stitch.
  • Increase by working 2 hdc in each stitch around.
  • End with 16 hdc.

For Round 3:

  • Chain 1, 1 hdc in the same stitch.
  • Increase pattern (2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in following stitch).
  • Repeat pattern around.

Round 4:

  • Chain 1, 1 hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in the next stitch.
  • Repeat around.
  • Follow this pattern for round 4, increasing the number of hdc between each increase (3 hdc between each increase).

2 Save

Basket Sides:

Round 5:

  • Continuation from base pattern, create one more round of increases.
  • Join as usual.

Round 6:

  • Chain 1, work 1 hdc in each stitch (no increases).
  • You should have 40 hdc.

For Round 7:

  • Chain 1, turn work to start single crochet (sc) round.
  • Skip first stitch (where slip stitch is), work 2 sc in next stitch.
  • Pattern around: skip 1 stitch, 2 sc in the next.
  • Join by slipping stitch to first sc (not the chain).

Round 8 and Beyond:

  • Continue working, alternating between hdc rounds and sc rounds until you have 10 rounds in total, ending on a hdc round.

Decorative Touches:

Puff Stitch Round:

  • Join a new color for the puff stitch round.
  • Chain 2, puff stitch in the same stitch.
  • Chain 1, skip next stitch, puff stitch in the next.
  • Join to the first puff stitch and fasten off this color.

Finishing Round with Main Color:

  • Pick up your main color loop.
  • Chain 4, work 2 sc into the chain space between puff stitches.
  • Join to the first sc.

Strap:

Creating the Strap:

  • Chain 1, single crochet in the next 4 stitches.
  • Turn, chain 1, work 4 sc.
  • Repeat until the strap is the desired length (35 rows suggested).
  • Sew it to the other side of the basket directly opposite the starting point.
