- Colors: Brown (130 yards), White (130 yards), and Gray (150 yards).
- Note: For a single color basket, approximately 410 yards total.
- Size 8mm (L) crochet hook.
- Scissors and yarn needle.
Gauge:
- Detailed in the pattern below, make a gauge swatch first if you wish.
Pattern Instructions:
Base:
Start with a magic circle using double strands of color A (brown).
- Round 1: Work 8 half double crochet (hdc) stitches inside the circle, pull tail to close the hole, join with a slip stitch, and chain 1.
- Round 2: Work 2 hdc in each stitch around (16 stitches). Change to color B (white) on the last stitch's final pull through.
- Round 3: 1 hdc in the first stitch, 2 hdc in the next stitch. Repeat - around (24 stitches).
- Round 4: 2 hdc in the first stitch, 1 hdc in each of the next two stitches. Repeat - around (32 stitches). Change to color C (gray) on the last stitch.
- Round 5: 1 hdc in each of the next three stitches, 2 hdc in the following stitch. Repeat - around (40 stitches).
- Round 6: 2 hdc in the first stitch, 1 hdc in each of the next four stitches. Repeat - around (48 stitches). Swap back to color A.
- Round 7 (Final Base Round): 1 hdc in each of the next five stitches, 2 hdc in the following stitch. Repeat - around (56 stitches).
Walls:
Round 8: Work in the third loop of each hdc from the previous round, making a double crochet (dc) into each stitch around (56 stitches). This creates a nice flat base edge.
- Round 9: Regular dc in the first stitch, front post double crochet (fpdc) in the next. Repeat - around.
- Round 10: Swap the stitches to fpdc in the first stitch, regular dc in the next. Repeat - around. Change color after every second round.
- Rounds 11 to 17: Continue the pattern established in rounds 9 and 10, changing colors appropriately.
Handles:
Round 18: Repeat round 10 (without color change).
- Round 19 (Handles Round): Work the established pattern for the first 10 stitches, chain 8, skip 8 stitches (for the first handle), work the pattern for 20 stitches, chain 8, skip 8 stitches (second handle), and complete the pattern for the remaining stitches.
- Round 20 (Final Round): Work 1 hdc in each stitch around the basket and 8 hdc over the chain space of each handle. This firms up the handles.
